Film Studies is an academic discipline concerned with the history, criticism, theory and practice of the cinema both as an art form and as a documentary record of our time. The cinema is a source of pleasure and knowledge, and its study should form a part of one's cultural education.
The Film Studies program offered by the School for Studies in Art and Culture is interested in the history, aesthetics, and criticism of the cinema. Our seven full-time faculty, together with part-time instructors, have a broad range of expertise and enthusiasms, and together we provide a comprehensive and varied approach to the discipline. Carleton does not offer courses in film production, although students can apply outside production experience to upper-level courses.
Courses in film studies include: national cinemas, including the cinemas of Great Britain, France, Japan, Africa, Latin America, Germany, Russia, and the United States, as well as Canadian cinema; studies of individual filmmakers; genre and medium studies, such as the documentary, the musical, animation, experimental film and video, and digital media; introductory and advanced courses in film theory and history; the film industry; topics in cinema and gender, and special topics. |
